Import opening receivables and payables
Every unpaid invoice and bill comes into Finday with the status Unpaid, ready to be received or paid.
Before you start
- Customers and vendors exist in Contacts, in the Active stage and with the right type.
- The cutover date on the Opening Balances page.
- The list of invoices and bills still open at the cutover date: number, contact, date, due date and the amount still unpaid.
- Access to manage the chart of accounts, sales and purchases.
Steps
Step 1: Open the receivable or payable import
Open Accounting › Chart of Accounts and click Opening balances. On the Receivable or Payable card, click Import. Both open the Import beginning AR/AP dialog.

Step 5: Match the receivable and payable accounts
In the opening balance grid, enter the receivable total on the receivable account and the payable total on the payable account, equal to the import totals, then publish.

When you are done
- Each row becomes a sales invoice or purchase bill with the status Unpaid, one line, without VAT or WHT.
- A blank document number is filled in automatically, and a blank due date becomes the document date plus 30 days.
- These documents post no journal. Enter the receivable and payable totals in the opening balance grid, then publish.
- Their receipts and payments are recorded like any invoice or bill.
Common problems
Can I create regular invoices or bills for old balances?
Don't. Regular invoices and bills post journals, so the balance would be counted twice with the opening journal. Use this import.
A row is marked invalid
Usually the contact is not found or has the wrong type: receivable rows need a customer, payable rows a vendor. Also check that the amount is above zero and the due date is not before the document date.
The receivable total does not match the balance sheet
Finday does not compare the two automatically. Add up the open amounts in the import file and make sure they equal the receivable account in the opening balance grid. Do the same for payables.
